Porsche 914 Engine Swaps

Since its creation, the Porsche 914 has been built around a balance of speed and control. With a lightweight chassis and mid-engine layout, the little Porsche was designed around the casual enthusiast, not for high-performance driving.

 However, over the decades since it rolled off the assembly line, like all cars with a fan following, the 914 has had many different engine conversions to fit the owners' wild hair schemes. Ranging from simple 4- to 6-cylinder OEM swaps to much more ludicrous front-engine V8 conversions and even EV swaps, 914s have just about seen everything power them.

That is exactly what we will be discussing. 

The World Of Six Porsche Six Cylinder Swaps

For those of us who had the 914-4 4-cylinder iteration, by far and away the most common swap done is to go to the factory 6-cylinder that came in them as well. 

Compared to the 4 cylinders that power ranged from anywhere between 76 and 95 hp throughout the production run, the 2.0L 6-cylinder made over 110hp and added 115 lb-ft of torque. This may not sound like a huge difference, but the 6-cylinder has a much higher redline and is far more rev-happy than its 4-cylinder counterparts, making it a much more enjoyable option during spirited driving. 

Another very common swap for 914s is to ditch the factory 6-cylinder entirely in favor of one of the many larger-displacement Porsche engines from cars like the 911. These conversions would include the 2.2L, 2.4L, 2.7L, as well as the later-year 3.0L and 3.2L flat sixes that became a sort of gold standard for 914-6 conversions. This allowed the 2,100lb featherweight to put out close to or over 200 horsepower and gave the 914 a better power-to-weight ratio than many factory 911s of the era. 


Other Popular Porsche 914 Engine Swaps

While the Porsche flat-six is the most brand-correct conversion, it is not the only engine swap people have explored in the 914 platform.

Because the 914 is mid-engine, relatively light, and supported by a long-running enthusiast community, owners have installed several different engines over the years. Some of these builds are Porsche-focused. Others move outside the Porsche family entirely.

The most common alternate swap conversations usually include Subaru flat-four and flat-six engines, Chevrolet V8 and LS-based setups, Mazda rotary engines, VW/Audi turbocharged engines, and electric conversions. That is exactly what we will be jumping into next! 


Subaru Engine Swaps

Subaru swaps make sense on paper and are one of the most common non Porsche/VW swaps because the Subaru engine is also a horizontally opposed layout. That makes it feel more spiritually connected to the 914 than many inline or V-style engines.

Common Subaru swap choices include EJ-series flat-fours and EZ-series flat-sixes. These engines can provide strong power, modern fuel injection, parts availability, and a relatively compact layout. Turbo Subaru engines can also make substantial power and are capable of putting out well over 200hp in a lightweight chassis.

The biggest challenge that most subaru engines create when it comes swapping it into the 914 is that they are liquid cooled. That means the car needs a radiator, coolant lines, fans, ducting, plumbing, and proper airflow management. Most builds place the radiator up front, which requires careful planning and cutting. Coolant routing from the engine bay to the front of the car must be safe, reliable, and protected.

Making these a common swap for anyone looking to get a little industrious, when it comes to their Porsche 914.

Chevrolet V8 and LS Swaps


V8-swapped 914s have been around ever since the 914 came to america, and the appeal is obvious. A lightweight mid-engine Porsche with American V8 power can be brutally fast. Small-block Chevy and LS-based swaps offer huge horsepower potential, strong aftermarket support, and a very different personality from a factory-style 914.

A V8 914 requires serious planning.Virtually every faucet of the little sports car has to be modified, from a cooling system to carving out and shoehorning the entire V8 drivetrain in the back of one. The car may gain enormous power, but it also moves further away from the light, momentum-based character that defines a traditional 914. Instead it turns into a torque monster that can be a true handful. 


Mazda Rotary Swaps

Mazda rotary swaps are another option that has appeared in 914 builds.

The rotary engine like the 12A or 13B  are compact, lightweight, and capable of making anywhere from 110-over 250 hp if it has the turbo. It can fit the character of a small, lightweight sports car and create a unique driving experience.

However, rotary engines bring their own challenges. Cooling is critical. Exhaust heat can be significant. Tuning, reliability, oiling, and drivability all depend heavily on the quality of the build. The positive is that their are companies like Kennedy Engineered Products that build adapter plates that allow you to bolt the stock 901 gearbox. So that your not jumping through hoops just trying to install it. 

VW/Audi Turbo Swaps

The later model VW and Audi turbocharged engine swaps are another option that maintain the weight bias much better than the V8 swaps do and can also deliver serious hp. With many builders being able to put out 350+ hp without a having a strenuous parts list. 

The three engines for the 914 that can be made to work are the VW/Audi 1.8T (AEB/AMB), the VW 2.5L (O7K) Turbo, and the VW/Audi 2.0 FSI/TSI. 

The VW/Audi 1.8T (AEB/AMB) is highly sought after for this swap because its axle flanges align very well with the original transmission placement, and as mentioned previously, with an upgraded turbocharger can put out well over 350 hp.

The VW 2.5L (07K) is a 5 cylinder found in Jetta’s and Golfs, is another great option that provides an incredible balance of weight and power and is also capable of reliably making great power as it is quite literally half of the famous Lamborghini V10!

And like a broken record, one of the biggest challenges with this swap is their liquid cooling systems. Most of these will require serious modifications to the engine bay and rear suspension but when complete, can transform a 914 into a serious track weapon. 


Electric Porsche 914 Conversions

Electric 914 conversions have also become more common as EV technology as the technology has become more common.

The 914 is a logical candidate for electric conversion because it is small, lightweight, mid-engine, and relatively simple. An electric drivetrain can give the car instant torque, quiet operation, and modern usability. But EV conversions bring major packaging questions.

Battery placement, weight distribution, cooling, charging, motor mounting, controller setup, wiring, safety systems, and range all need to be engineered correctly. A poorly planned EV conversion can damage the balance that makes the 914 enjoyable in the first place.But when done correctly can deliver a very unique driving experience. 


Which Swap Makes the Most Sense?

For most Porsche-focused owners, the flat-six conversion remains the most natural answer.

It keeps the car in the Porsche family. It builds on the 914/6 legacy. It adds sound, performance, and personality without completely changing the identity of the car. It is also the swap that tends to make the most sense for owners who care about long-term Porsche value and brand-correct engineering.

After that every oddball swap comes with its advantages as well as disadvantages. The Subaru swaps can make sense for owners who want modern power, fuel injection, and a boxer layout without the cost of a Porsche six. While the V8 and LS swaps make sense for owners who want maximum power and are less concerned with originality or Porsche purity. A Rotary swap may be for owners who want something rare and unconventional. Just like how the  VW/Audi turbo swaps appeal to those who like the Volkswagen-Porsche connection and want modern turbocharged performance or how EV conversions are those who want to completely reimagine the 914 as an electric sports car. 

With an engine swap, theirs simply no wrong answer, it is up to you on how you want to build your Porsche 914. Because uniqueness and individuality is what makes the 914 world so great.
